Karumbunathan wins 2009 Bina Memorial Scholarship

Aswin Karumbunathan
of Crisfield has been awarded the 2009 healthcare studies scholarship established in memory of McCready Memorial Hospital’s late urologist, Dr. Farid Bina.

Karumbunathanis a pre-med student at Brown University in Rhode Island. He was Holly Grove Christian School’s Class of 2009 valedictorian.

At Holly Grove, he won a National Merit Scholarship and is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar. He also was a member of the track team. He is an avid tennis player and swimmer.

In an essay submitted with his Bina scholarship application, Karumbunathan wrote that he is “passionate about medicine” and has pursued various opportunities to gain insight into that field over the past several years.

He has volunteered over 200 hours at McCready Memorial and researched the connection between thromboembolism and pacemakers with Dr. Emmanuel Nsah, a Salisbury cardiologist.

He attended summer courses in Computer Science and DNA-Based biology at Brown University. He studied AP Biology in distance education courses from the center for talented youth at Johns Hopkins University and has taken many advanced courses at Holly Grove School.

Stacey Swift, a surgical nurse at McCready, took the lead in establishing the Bina Memorial Scholarship when the physician died several years ago. This year, the scholarship was for $1,500. Funding comes from donations by McCready employees, individuals and church groups in the community.

Previous Bina memorial scholarship winners are:

  • 2008 - H. William Ward III
  • 2007 - Lori Dize
  • 2006 - Warren Willey
  • 2005 - Kellie Labo and Kimberly Sterling

Swift said the goal is to award a Bina memorial scholarship annually to a local student. McCready employees donate to the fund via paycheck deductions, and Swift hopes that additional gifts will continue to come from area residents and groups.

Those wishing to contribute may do so by sending donations to:
