There is no such thing as a diabetic diet anymore. That does not mean, however, that you can go wild with the junk foods and sweets, either. What that means is that the American Diabetes Association recommends a well-balanced diet incorporating all the food groups in carefully measured amounts.
To reach that goal, learning meal planning is crucial. Planning what and when you are going to eat each day is the most important tool you can use to control your diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.
Several times a day, you will have to decide what, how much and when to eat. This strategy may change several times each year in accord with your medication and exercise plans. For this reason, you need a custom-designed meal plan that take into account your goals, your likes and dislikes. That is when a Registered Dietician (who has experience in working with diabetics) is needed.
A good dietician listens to your goals, considers your other health issues and gives you the tools and support you need to succeed. The dietician will also teach you how to count carbohydrates, now considered the optimal way to plan your diet. Learning how to read labels and about portion control are other key skills a diabetic needs.
