I remember when ...
(
Myrna Bozman of Princess Anne, a Registered Nurse, penned these thoughts on Nov. 10, 2008, the day an excavator began demolishing the old "B" wing of the Tawes Nursing Home, making way for a new, four-story structure. The scene brought back some memories.

As I stand watching Dickey Dump Truck tear down the nursing home, I started to reminisce ...
I attended high school with Dickey in the late 60’s. Then, (I) went to nursing school, took my LPN exam and worked at the Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home the first summer that it opened prior to returning to become an RN.
I remember when we had (only) one patient - Dr. Clarence D. Collins. (Today there are 63.) When I left in August 1968 to go back to school, I think there were 12 residents.
The wing being demolished is the only wing there when I worked the 3 p.m.-to-11 p.m. shift along with several other associates (who) still work here ( Barbara Wharton Ennis, Michael White, to name two).
Dickie is now tearing down the sunroom of the first wing.
I remember pushing my grandfather out to the porch from his room when he was a resident there. In later years, my mother sat on that same porch.
I also thought how many little boys dream of doing what Dickie is doing now. I know my grandson would love to watch that.
Memories go on and on, but the best is the great personal care that those residents received. And now, we look forward to the same level of care but in a new modern facility. |
