If you can drive a van, do clerical work, organize fund-raising projects, enjoy working with the elderly or just want to help other people in your community, McCready has a volunteer opportunity for you.
Becoming a McCready volunteer requires just a few hours of your time on a schedule that suits you. Volunteers who enjoy traveling don’t have to make a year-long commitment. We also welcome volunteers who live in the Crisfield area part-time.
Volunteers must be adults age 18 or over.
Depending on the type of volunteer position you assume, our volunteer director, our activities director, our education director and other members of our staff will give you the training and support you need. In addition, as a volunteer, you will enjoy interacting and socializing with other volunteers and staff members.
We have openings for volunteers in McCready Memorial Hospital, at the Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and with our Care-A-Van patient transport service. Our auxiliaries also welcome volunteers. Our Board of Directors annually recruits new members to guide and govern the McCready Foundation.
Reception desk volunteers are stationed in the hospital's main lobby, where they greet visitors and arriving patients. These volunteers also assist with paperwork for patients being admitted for testing or surgery. Because reception desk volunteers deal with confidential patient information, they, like staff members, attend special orientation and continuing education programs. Reception desk volunteers usually work mornings and in the early afternoons.
Hospital department volunteers also work mornings and afternoons. They are stationed in various areas including Imaging (X-ray), the medical-surgical unit, the emergency department as well as offices such as human resources, administration and quality improvement. Depending on their assignments, volunteers may also require special training.
Nursing-home volunteers visit with residents, read to them, play the piano for special occasions and assist staff members with residents’ activities, including crafts, games or letter writing.
Care-A-Van volunteers help out by driving the hospital mini-van which provides courtesy transportation services to patients with healthcare appointments at McCready Memorial Hospital. Care-A-Van drivers sometimes take nursing home residents -- with a nursing assistant -- to appointments out of Crisfield. Care-A-Van appointments are scheduled between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. {Volunteer drivers must have a good driving record, a valid driver’s license and free time to give during some of those hours.}
