The McCready Foundation's fund-raising office received an unexpected surprise in the mail Memorial Day week.

Friends of Beverly and P. Jay Purnell are sending in donations in honor of the couple's 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Purnell is Crisfield's mayor, and he also serves on the associate board of directors for the McCready Foundation.

The Purnells' two adult children organized a "surprise" party over the recent holiday weekend to celebrate the milestone.

The couple's friends asked that their gifts be applied to the building fund for the new Alice B. Tawes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, now under construction adjacent to the existing facility. Cathy Love, the Purnells' daughter, said she's not sure who came up with the idea but described it as a "wonderful gesture."

When the McCready Foundation board announced plans in 2006 to build a $12½ million, four-story replacement for the current nursing home, the figure included a goal of raising $1 million in the community. The gifts honor the Purnells' marital milestone pushed the figure past $900,000 mark.

Marie Witt, McCready Foundation's development director, said, "it's nice to know people are thinking of us on this happy occasion. We certainly want to thank the Purnells."

Mrs. Purnell's mother, Catherine Sterling, is a resident in the Tawes nursing home.
