The most pressing need facing the McCready Foundation is completing the $1 million community capital campaign to replace the existing Tawes Nursing Home, which opened in 1968.
We are less than $30,000 from reaching our goal, which you can track by watching the "fund-raising thermometer on our Web site's home page. Donations and pledges to date for the new Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center have been humbling and we are extremely grateful - especially during the economically stressed times.
The community fund drive is being coordinated by a small committee of McCready board members and friends in the community.
That group is chaired by Crisfield business leader Jay Tawes, the great-grandson of the woman for whom the nursing home is named. In November 2008, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore named Tawes its 2008 Humanitarian of the Year for his philanthropic spirit.
Gifts to the campaign have come from local fraternal organizations, churches, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, local government and in the form of a grant from the state of Maryland's bond bill program.
Individuals and families have also given donations. They range from a $10 money order to a $25,000 pledge ... to a gift of stock worth over $7,000. Corporate friends have been equally generous.
Gifts to the campaign of $1,000 or more will be acknowledged on a donor recognition plaque to hang in the new facility. Some funds literally come in βone brick at a time.β Along with the many one-time gifts and pledges, a campaign-within-the-campaign offers a special brick on which a brief sentiment can be inscribed in recognition of a $100 donation. The bricks β actually, paving stones β will be installed in the new building.
